Analysis of Sleep Habits

Introduction

Group 2 collectively designed a survey to poll respondents re: their sleep habits. A topic very relevant to this group as all members are adult students with many busy schedules.  Survey results can be classified as a convenience sample with voluntary participants as they were obtained through interview and Facebook polling.

The following questions were included in this survey:

1.       Age of participant

2.       Sex (gender)

3.       Average hours of sleep each night

4.       Quality of sleep

Of the 258 total respondents of this survey,  the majority were female (79%) and the minority were male (21%).

Each respondent was asked to rate their average sleep quality.  Both male & female respondents most commonly rate their sleep as "fair" (M: 40.7%, F: 46%) and least commonly rate their sleep as "very poor" (M: 0:01%, F: 3%).  

There are two sleep quality characteristics that had different % based on gender which need to be noted.    There are significant differences between the results for "very good" and "poor".  18.5% of males rate their sleep quality as "very good" however, only 6% of females rated the same.    16% of females rate their sleep quality as "poor" as opposed to the 9% of males.   

Looking at Numerical Variables

Respondents of this survery were also asked to identify their age and the average number of hours of sleep each night.  

In the histogram below, the graph is able to identify the mean amount of sleep as 6.7 hours.

Review of the summary of statistics shows that the average amount of sleep per night is 6.7 hours with a variance of 2.04 and standard deviation of 1.42.   While the minimum amount of hours reported was 2 and the maximum was 11, the median is 7.   There is not a large amount of variability between the data.
