PHASE TWO: Flagler College Students and Climate Change- Rebecca Ban

Introduction:

On the first phase of this project, opinions on climate change of 150 Flagler College statistics students from the fall semester of 2018 was investigated. In this phase of the report, this sample of 150 students will be divided into two smaller samples. The two samples are the sample of Flagler College students who do and do not live in a coastal region. For purposes of this report, the two sample will be defined with a simple phrase. The term, “Coastal” will define the sample of those Flagler College students who live in a coastal region, “Not Coastal” will define the people who do not live in a coastal region. There are 102 Coastal students sampled and 48 Not Coastal students sampled.

Students who were surveyed answered many other questions. They reported the number of dramatic climatic events they have experienced, whether or not they think there is a dramatic increase in climatic events and if they believe in climate change. In this report, three comparisons will be explored. First, a comparison will be made between if they live in a coastal region or not and the number of dramatic climatic events they have experienced. Then the response to this sample will be compared to the Coastal and Not Coastal Students.

 

Comparison #1: Number of Dramatic Climatic Events Experienced

The following stacked boxplots and corresponding summary statistics represent the number of dramatic climatic events that were experienced by Coastal and Not Coastal students.

Those students that do not live in a coastal environment reported experiencing less dramatic climatic events than those who live in a coastal region. The students who live in a coastal region have experienced up to 25 dramatic climatic events. The median between Coastal and Not Coastal are different, where Coastal is 5 dramatic climatic events and Not Coastal is experiencing 3.5 dramatic climatic events. The Upper and Lower Quartile varies between the Coastal and Not Coastal as well. Coastal has a Lower Quartile of 3 dramatic climatic events and an Upper Quartile of 7 dramatic climatic events. While the Not Coastal has a Lower Quartile of 1 dramatic climatic event and 5.5 dramatic climatic events. The minimum and maximum for Coastal and Not Coastal are the same, with a minimum of 0 for both and a maximum of 25 for both as well. Both Coastal and Not Coastal had outliers, more for Coastal with 8 outliers while Not Coastal had 6. The upper limit for Coastal is higher with 13 dramatic climatic events while the upper limit of Not Coastal is 8 dramatic climatic events. This correlates that people who live in Coastal regions will experience more dramatic climatic events. The variability of both responses is almost the same. The IQR for Not Coastal is 4.4, while the IQR for Coastal is 4. This data might show that people who live in coastal regions might experience more dramatic climatic events.

Comparison #2: Is There an Increase in Dramatic Climatic Events

The following split bar plot shows that Coastal and Not Coastal students differ slightly on whether or not there is an increase in dramatic climatic events. Students who said that is an increase in dramatic climatic events have similar answers in both coastal and not coastal; 91.2% of student who do live in a coastal region also do believe that there is an increase in dramatic climatic events. While 87.5% of students who do not live in a coastal region believe that there is an increase in dramatic climatic events. While the students who do not believe in an increase in dramatic climatic events only varies slightly as well. Student who live in a coastal region, only 8.8% of them do not believe that there is an increase in dramatic climatic events. While for students who do not live in a coastal region, only 12.5% believes that there is not an increase in dramatic climatic events.

Comparison #3: Do Students Believe in Climate Change

The following contingency table compares the responses of belief in climate change and whether or not students live in a coastal region. By interpreting the data present in the contingency table, we determined that these events are associated. When we determine the probability of students believing in climate change we use the equation, climate change/coastal region, giving us the probability of 68% (102/150). Whenever we are looking to find the probability of believing in climate change and living in a coastal environment we use the equation, believe in climate change/coastal region, giving us the probability of 97.33% (146/150).

Conclusion:

 

In this comparison of students who live in a coastal region (Coastal students) and students who do not live in a coastal region (Not Coastal). It was found that these two groups are associated by not entirely correlated, as their probabilities do not match up completely. It was found that students who lived in a coastal region tend to experience more dramatic climatic events then students who do not live in coastal regions. Through the research we found that whether or not the student lived in a coastal region or not they do believe in climate change.
