Money made from first 30 days of Sorcerer's Stone and Deathly Hallow's Part 2 release

Ashley-Aurora Abalos, Period 4

Question of inquiry: Did Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the first installment of the Harry Potter movies, earn more money or less than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the last installment of the Harry Potter movies, years later?

Through using data of the first 30 days of sales numbers from both the very first and very lat installments to the Harry Potter movies, I was able to compare the movies' total sales and answer my question of inquiry.

The centers for total sales of each movie were relatively close. However the last Harry Potter movie had the definite lead on Sorcerer's stone at its almost $6,000,000 median in sales. As demonstrated through these boxplots, and further confirmation through the summary stats, the median of Deathly Hallows is higher than Sorcerer's Stone at $5,821,898.5 versus Sorcerer's Stone's $4,391,000. This is a $1,430,898.5 difference in total sales, and although it may seem like a lot of money this is not a statistically significant enough figure of money since it does not even hit close to two standard deviations above any mean.

For spread, Deathly Hallows has a more widely spread graph than Sorcerer's stone. The range of Sorcerer's stone is $32,644,941 while Deathly Hallow's is $89,549,115 range, a $56,904,174 gap between the two. This is statistically significant with a difference in range higher than Sorcerer Stone's actual range... wow! With standard deviation, Sorcerer's stone has $9,436,981.6 while Deathly Hallow's had $17,793,883 standard deviation. Again, another extremely statistically significant figure with Deathly Hallow's SD being almost double of what Sorcerer Stone's is and with a $8,356,901.4 gap. In both range and SD, Deathly Hallows reigns supreme with higher range and SD.

For shape, both movies demonstrated a skewed right shape with higher variability concentrated towards the left side of their dotplots rather than the far right. However, Sorcerer's Stone was slightly more skewed right than Deathly Hallows due to more frequent lower daily sales than the other movie. For example, Sorcerer's Stone sales, wihtin the first 30 days, were able to hit as low as $868,000 in comparison to Deathly Hallow's $1,522,004. The fact that the first HP movie resulted in a lower minimum

ensure that it had also generated more lower values than the last HP movie. With the first movie's higher variablity

in reaching lower quadrants than the last installment, it is safe to say that this helps to futher reason towards a more

skewed right graph of Sorcerer's Stone than Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Throughout my research I have learned to respect those that do this for a living more. It was extremely tedious attempting to even find data that allowed 30 to 50 points of refrence let alone being the ones to actually gather the data and turn it into a report! Through this report I also learned to, hopefully, correctly use more of the statistical language that is so necessary to getting thorugh the AP test and have learned to become more comfortable in this field of study.

For my question of inquiry, I had wondered if the first movie of the Harry Potter movies, The Sorcerer's Stone, had made more or less money than in the last installment of Harry Potter series. Based on my research and data I had collected, yes Harry Potter Deathly Hallows: part 2 did generate more money than the first installment of the series did. A fun fact, Harry Potter Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is actually one of the few movies that have hit over a billion dollars in sales at a solid number 8 in rank.

Some biases for the data might have been that in this time there was just more money circulating around as opposed to 2001. The fact that people had more money in their pockets and were not as worried with making it before the next paycheck and such have invited more people into buyinf tickets for these movies and aiding in total sales. Another bias that might have influenced sales would be the fact that the Harry Potter movie franachise might have just been more well known during the sales and advertisment of the last movie in the series. With the debut of the first movie, yes there were books but if you hadnt read them before it was unlikely that you would be as hyped for the release of this movie. The popularity was defintely there but just Harry Potter was just not regarded as such a cultural phenomenom as it is held to today. The fact that is was not as popular might have led to the less impressive sales, as compared to the last movie.
