Women Heads of State/Govt

I found this data on the Wikipedia pages “List of elected or appointed female heads of government” and “List of elected and appointed female heads of state.” The data ranges from the first elected female head of state, Khertek Anchimaa-Toka, who took office in 1940, to current female incumbents. The data includes each leaders name, start and end dates, and length in office. Also included are the term lengths for countries with three or more women leaders total. I am personally interested in this data because of its feminist nature and my citizenship in a country which has never elected a female head of state.

I used this information to create a bar graph displaying how many times women leaders have held office in each country. There are 148 entires total, so I only included countries with at least three entries. What stands out the most when looking at this graph is that San Marino has had 16 terms with female leaders. Two possible explanations for this outlier are San Marino’s odd existence as a microstate and its half year term limit for the Captains Regent (of which there are always two.) Three of the eleven countries are situated in South/Southeast Asia, and two of them are Scandinavian countries. These geographic concentrations may be related to similar cultures, governments, or other shared attributes.
