The following data shows what has happned in 134 patients that had rescontruction of the trachea and the possible consequences that can come with it.  The first graph shows that the rate of death was higher in patients with a larger reconstruction size. Every patient with a reconstruction over 4 cm did end in death. The second graph shows the ages in which resconstruction sizes were repaired. It appears ages 50-60 had the least amount of repairs while the age group 20-30 had the most resection sizing starting at 3cm, possibly having the most deaths happen in that group as well as not many other age groups went over 4cm.

The second two charts shows whether or not death happened with intubation. It appears that when death did happen, the patient was intubated 64% of the time, and when death did not happen, only 7% were intubated.

The last chart shows the porportion confidence interval which shows that prior surgery is related to death.

Hi everyone - Stephanie forwarded these questions to me so that I could comment. Good news Stephanie - all of your visualizations are appropriate. The key to recognizing what visualization is best is to look at data type. The pie charts are appropriate because the data depicted (intubation or not) is nominal. Having two of them is also appropirate since you want to ultimately compare the two groups. The actual comparison needs to be done with a confidence interval or hypothesis test. You almost have that in result 5 (but you've looked at death/prior surgery there, not death/intubation. You should write a conclusion for it: "Based on the p-value 0.3044, we find no evidence to show that the proportion of deaths is different depending on whether or not patients had prior surgery."

Stephanie, I am not sure if a pie chart is an appropriate descriptive statistic for the data collected. From what I understand from the readings pie charts should only be used for nominal level data, or categories, and are not typically included in reports. Possibly the use of a box plot instead would be more appropriate. However, I can honestly say that I am no where near mastering any of this material so I could be completely off base!

The idea of creating a boxplot death with resection size does clearly suggest that death did occur more times with larger resections. The boxplot that you chose allows for visualization that is clear and easy to understand the data presented. The boxplot may be a good way to illustrate data for readers (like me) who may need a little more explanation.
I like your choice in graphs.
