The data set covers 12 years of vehicles and contains 398 individual entries. The data describes popular consumer vehicle’s miles per gallon (MPG), the number of engine cylinders, total engine size (displacement), engine horsepower, the vehicle weight, a measure of acceleration (0-60 MPH time), the model year of the vehicle (1970-1982), a coded identifier for the place of origin, and the make and model of the vehicle. MPG, number of cylinders, engine size, horsepower, weight, acceleration time, and model year are all numerical values. The vehicle origin, full name, make, and model are categorical. This data was chosen to meet the assignment requirements, and because cars are cool. *Origin data code: 1=USA, 2=Europe, 3=Japan. The "car name" variable was broken into additional make and model variables to ease analysis, a change from the original data set.

Clean Cities Alternative Fuel Price Reports, (http://www.afdc.energy.gov/fuels/prices.html) Electricity prices are taken from EIA's Real Prices Viewer (http://www.eia.gov/forecasts/steo/realprices/). Notes: *Electricity prices are reduced by a factor of 3.4 because electric motors are 3.4 times as efficient (on a BTU basis) as internal combustion engines. Efficiency adjustments were not made for other fuels because they are much smaller and inconsistent. Residential electricity prices were used because most recharging events occur at home. Residential real prices were converted to $/GGEs at a conversion of 33.7 kWh per GGE (per AFDC www.afdc.energy.gov/fuels/fuel_properties.php), then adjusted for efficiency because electric vehicles are 3.4 times as efficient as internal combustion engines (per GREET 1 2012 rev2 http://greet.es.anl.gov/) **Propane prices reflect the weighted average of "primary" and "secondary" stations. Primary stations have dedicated vehicle services and tend to be less expensive. Secondary stations are priced for the tanks and bottles market, and tend to be more expensive. Secondary stations are over-represented in the above chart because they comprise only 56% of the propane stations registered in the AFDC but approximately 75% of the stations in the price report. For data collection methodology, please see the actual price report. The number of stations surveyed, and therefore the quality of the data, increase throughout time. The most notable increase was for the 9/1/05 report. CNG, Propane, E85, and B20 prices were median prices before 9/1/05 and mean prices after this date. NAME: Exploring Relationships in Body Dimensions TYPE: Observational SIZE: 507 Observations, 25 Variables DESCRIPTIVE ABSTRACT: This dataset contains 21 body dimension measurements as well as age, weight, height, and gender on 507 individuals. The 247 men and 260 women were primarily individuals in their twenties and thirties, with a scattering of older men and women, all exercising several hours a week. SOURCE: Measurements were initially taken by the first two authors - Grete Heinz and Louis J. Peterson - at San Jose State University and at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Later, measurements were taken at dozens of California health and fitness clubs by technicians under the supervision of one of these authors. STORY BEHIND THE DATA: The first two authors investigated the correspondence between frame size, girths, and weight of physically active young men and women, most of whom were within normal weight range. One goal of this investigation was to develop predictive techniques to assess the lean/fat body composition of individuals. PEDAGOGICAL NOTES: These data can be used to provide statistics students practice in the art of data analysis. Such analyses range from simple descriptive displays to more complicated multivariate analyses such as multiple regression and discriminant analysis.
