Seating Choice versus GPA (Stacked & Split Columns for Front & Back Rows)
This dataset contains hypothetical (I believe) data on GPA for students who sit in the front and back row of a classroom. The data are shown in several ways: (a) two separate columns (one for the front row GPA and another or the back row GPA); (b) stacked with one column to indicate front or back row and another column with the GPAs; and (c) the row column repeated as a 0/1 indicator variable. This dataset is useful for comparing the different ways that StatCrunch can compare the means of two groups: (a) The two columns of scores (front and back) can be used in the 2-sample t-test or a one-way ANOVA; (b) the stacked text column (front/back) with a separate column for GPA can also be used for one-way ANOVA; and (c) the 0/1 indicator column and stacked GPAs can be used with correlation and regression. Every procedure gives the same p-value and same conclusion, thus highlighting the similarity of statistical procedures and StatCrunch's flexibility.

Sleep Deprivation Study
Does sleep deprivation have harmful effects on cognitive functioning three days later? Stickgold, James, and Hobson (Nature Neuroscience, 2000) investigated this question by providing training to 21 volunteer subjects followed up by an initial test. The subjects were then divided into two groups: one group was deprived of sleep following the test, and the other group was permitted unrestricted sleep after the test. Both groups were then allowed as much sleep as they wanted on the following two nights. All subjects were then re-tested on the third day. This data set contains the improvement as measured by the difference between the two exam scores (second - first) and the sleep conditions imposed on the subject. Note that a negative value indicates a decrease in performance.

Exam Incentives
Will cash incentives increase students test scores? A college professor conducted an experiment to examine that idea. A group of 20 volunteers from the professor’s class participated in the experiment. Students were informed that they would receive compensation for taking an exam over the material from the professor’s class. Students were told to do the best they could on the exam. The 20 students were randomly assigned a dollar amount for their compensation that ranged from $1 to $50.
