Introduction:

On the first phase of this project, the diversity of the sample of 150 Flagler College students from Spring semester 2019 was explored. In this phase of the report, this same sample of 150 students will be divided into two smaller samples. The two samples are the sample of Flagler College students who do not think the college faculty is diverse and the sample of Flagler College students who do think the college faculty is diverse. For purposes of this report, the two samples will be defined with a simple phrase.  The term “No, Diverse” will define the sample of those Flagler College students who do not think the college faculty is diverse and the term “Yes, Diverse” will refer to the sample of those Flagler College students who do think the college faculty is diverse.  There are 63 “No, Diverse” and 87 “Yes, Diverse”sampled.

Students surveyed answered many other questions. They reported the number of countries they’ve visited,if they are male or female, and if they feel as though the student body at Flagler College is diverse or not. In this report, three comparisons will be investigated.  First, a comparison will be made between the number of countries visited between No, Diverse and Yes, Diverse students. Then the responses to their gender and the feeling that the student body is diverse will be compared between the “No, Diverse” and “Yes, Diverse” data.

 

Comparison #1: Number of Countries Visited Between Yes, Diverse and No, Diverse

The following stacked boxplots and corresponding summary statistics represent the number of countries visited between Yes Diverse and No Diverse. One of the Yes Diverse students stated that they traveled to 25 countries. Although there are several outliers for Yes Diverse and one for No Diverse that are outside the fences, they are not too extreme, therefore, it will be included in our data set.

 

Overall, there was not much of a difference in the number of countries visited between the “Yes, Diverse” students and the “No, Diverse” students. The median number of countries visited for the “No, Diverse” students was 2 countries while the median number of countries visited “Yes, Diverse” Students were 2. There is no difference between the two groups.  The first and third quartiles for the samples were the same (at 0 and 5 countries respectively) and the minimum and maximum number of countries visited were also very similar (at 0 and between 15 and 25 countries respectively). In fact, the third quartile for both the “Yes, Diverse” and “No, Diverse” students were equal at 5. Furthermore, the variability of the responses is the same between the two groups based on an IQR of 5 countries for both samples. Therefore, it seems that regardless of how many countries a student has visited, it doesn’t seem to have a correlation to their perception of diversity on Flagler’s campus.

Comparison #2: Diverse Faculty Vs. Student Gender

The following split bar plot shows that Yes, Diverse and No, Diverse Students did differ in their responses to the diversity of the college faculty.  Approximately 74.6% of those who said Flagler College does not have a diverse faculty were female, and approximately 25.4% of those who said Flagler College does not have a diverse faculty were males. This is certainly an interesting result because approximately 63.2% of those who said Flagler College has a diverse faculty were females, and 36.8% of those who said Flagler College has a diverse faculty were males. Based on the data given, more females said that Flagler College does not have a diverse faculty, while more males said Flagler College does have a diverse faculty.

Comparison #3: Diverse Student Body

 

The following contingency table compares the responses of whether or not the student body at Flagler is diverse between the “No, Diverse” and “Yes, Diverse” results.  Overall, 95 out of the 150 students surveyed believe that Flagler College has a diverse student body. Thus, 63.3% (95/150) of all the students surveyed feel like Flagler does have a diverse student body.  Therefore, the majority of the students surveyed feel as though Flagler College has a diverse student body.

 

Of the 63 “No, Diverse” students surveyed, 21 feel that Flagler College has a diverse student body and of the 95 “Yes, Diverse” students surveyed, 74 feel that Flagler has a diverse student body.  That is, 33.3% (21/63) of the “No, Diverse” students feel that Flagler College does have a diverse student body while 77.9% (74/95) of the “Yes, Diverse” students feel that Flagler College has a diverse student body.  Thus, approximately 45% more of the “Yes, Diverse” students feel that Flagler College has a diverse student body. There is certainly a significant difference in opinion on whether or not Flagler College’s student body is diverse.

Conclusion

In this comparison of the opinions between the students surveyed who do not feel the faculty at Flagler is diverse (No, Diverse) and those students surveyed who do feel the faculty at Flagler is diverse (Yes, Diverse), it was found that the size of these two groups did not have a significant difference in their opinion of whether Flagler College has a diverse faculty or not, since No Diverse is 42% and Yes Diverse is 58%. There is no major differences in their amount of experience in world travel. It was found, though, that the two groups did differ in their opinion on the diversity of the student body at Flagler College. Gender seems to play a factor in the response in opinions of diversity. This is not surprising, as the number of males enrolled at Flagler College is significantly less than females enrolled. This is shown in the ratio of the males to females in the survey. If a student feels that their college has a diverse faculty, then they could be more apt to embrace a diverse student body and would consider little diversity on campus to have potential negative effects.
