Statistics - Project Report

        The question I selected was, “What is the mean salary for preschool teachers in the Iowa, Quad Cities?  Is the mean salary less than $28,000 (the starting salary for a teacher in the K-12 system in Iowa)?”
	I collected my data first by calling the preschools listed in the phonebook on the Iowa side of the Quad Cities and speaking to the director of each facility.  The preschools that refused or seemed hesitant about this information, I went to the facility and spoke to the directors in person. Wages that were given either monthly or hourly, I figured a nine month preschool year and a forty hour work week. All salary’s are for an annual income for preschool teachers working a nine month school year and forty hours per week.
	The following are the results I collected:

	The basic statistics for this information is:  Mean salary = $11,887.14, Median Salary = $11,520, and the Standard Deviation is $2,958.35.  I have included a Histogram for this information in StatCrunch under the name vgerks.  The interval estimated for the mean salary states lower limit would be $10,540.52 and the upper limit salary would be $13,233.77.
	The hypothesis test for the mean is as follows:
		H0: mean > $28,000 
		H1: mean <$28,000
		Test Statistic: -24.358
		Critical Value: .05 alpha, DF 20 = -1.725
		P Value: 0+
		Reject H0
        There is evidence that the annual salary of a preschool teacher is less than $28,000 the mean salary for a teacher in the K-12 system in Iowa.
	Sources of possible error could be the schools collected; faith based vs. public, education and experience pertaining to the preschool teacher’s position, and  also the personnel I spoke with.  I asked for the director but in certain instances I felt I was not speaking to this person.
	Ways to improve the study would be to go to the preschools and sit down with the directors and see what types of pay scales they offer for entry level preschool teachers.  Ask questions about education and experience, and record all different levels of pay.
	I have included all of the graphs and statistical figures in the StatCrunch program under the screen name of vgerks.  
	The mean salary for preschool teachers in the Iowa Quad Cities according to my random sample is $11,887.14.  The mean salary is less than the $28,000 (the starting salary for a teacher in the K-12 system in Iowa).
